Christian - St. Catherine's Monastery
Located at the foot of Mount Moses, St. Catherine’s Monastery was constructed by order of the Emperor Justinian between 527 and 565. It is built around what is thought to be Moses’ Burning Bush, with a chapel built atop it. This spectacular natural setting houses priceless works of art, including Arab mosaics, Greek and Russian icons, Western oil paintings, fine sacerdotal ornaments, marbles, chalices, and reliquaries, including one donated by Czar Alexander II in the 19th century and another by Empress Catherine of Russia in the 17th century.
One of the greatest highlights of St. Catherine’s Monastery is its collection of illuminated manuscripts, one of the largest and most important in the world, with over 4,500 volumes in Greek, Christian languages, Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, and other languages. This makes it an invaluable site for scholars and visitors interested in Christian history and religious texts.
St. Catherine’s Monastery has a rich history, earning the title of the oldest working Christian monastery and the smallest diocese in the world. Originally ordered by Empress Helen, the monastery itself was constructed by Emperor Justinian to protect the monks and honor the site of the Burning Bush. The relics of St. Catherine, whose body was carried away by angels, are kept in a marble reliquary in the Basilica.
The monastery is also a formidable fortification, with granite walls 8 to 35 meters tall, surrounded by gardens and cypresses. It has survived numerous attacks over its 1,400-year existence, protecting its rich store of art and religious significance. Today, it is under the Greek Orthodox Church and continues to be a symbol of Christian devotion.
