LUXOR
Luxor is located at the northern end of the Nile and is home to a major airport, where many visitors begin their Egypt travel packages. A bustling, modern city, Luxor is steeped in both ancient Egyptian and more recent history, with its iconic monuments scattered throughout. The city boasts two famous temples, Luxor and Karnak, and was once known as Thebes in ancient times. Shopping is a great experience here, with silver, gold, cotton goods, leather items, and spices among the best bargains.
Luxor Temple is located right on the riverside, nestled between modern hotels and office buildings—a striking contrast. The temple is well preserved, with colossal statues of Ramses II, who added major structures to the temple. The partner obelisk from this site is now in Paris. The Museum, located between Luxor and Karnak temples, is small but offers insightful displays about the region’s history.
Karnak Temple, just a mile and a half north of Luxor Temple, is the largest religious building in the world and will leave you in awe. It was originally connected to Luxor Temple by an avenue of ram-headed sphinxes. Don’t miss the late-night “Son et Lumiere” presentations held here in multiple languages, offering a unique experience. Make sure to include this on your Egypt travel packages to explore one of the most remarkable ancient cities.
